Residential
The brief for this project was to update a single family residence built in the 60s, and adapt it to the needs of contemporary living. “No endeavor is too small for big ideas”.
The objective was to free the spaces within the house, but not jeopardize the structural integrity of the existing wood-frame construction. All windows were strategically re-proportioned and re-placed to bring both north and south light into the deep spaces. The fifth elevation (the roof plan) was given a 90 degree twist and a new double pitched “zigzag roof” was introduced.
The line of the new roof is carried down into the second floor spaces, and a new skylight introduced to bring south light in to the central stairwell and the adjacent bedrooms. In the living area, a low, 18 foot long concrete hearth with floor to ceiling glass drapes as room dividers sets off this radical remake of the infamous Vancouver Special geared to the iPod generation.
