Residential
A spectacular waterfront site set on the edge of a 30m deep gorge and overlooking a lunar landscape of rock outcrops inspired the design approach for this vacation home. The program is divided into a series of pavilions, physically separated but mentally connected by materials, views and architectural gestures that immediately called to mind the composition of Matisse’s painting ‘The Snail’. The fragmented ensemble of building blocks captures breezes and provides shade to a series of outdoor spaces, each with a distinctive character. In this composition, the water body, with its slender cantilevered steel bridge creates a natural divide.
The contrast of mass and transparency, between concrete and glass evokes the idea of skin and bone, an abstract representation of nature reinforced by the splashes of brilliant blue, orange, yellows, lavender, hot reds and pink that reflect the intense heat and light of the Sonoran Desert - its sun, sand and the vibrant colors of the desert flowers.
